DUBBO Region of Australia

Dubbo is located in the State of New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately 400 kilometers in a westerly direction inland from Sydney and located on what is referred to as the Western Plains – a vast rural area producing cattle, sheep, wheat and cotton. Dubbo has a population of 51,000 and the local government area covers 7,536 square kilometers. It is 264 meters above sea level. The Macquarie River runs through Dubbo.

Dubbo is the capital and service centre of the Orana Region which has a catchment population of 130,000. Dubbo is a transport hub being located on two major highways linking Melbourne and Brisbane, and Dubbo to the major port of Newcastle.

Its average minimum temperature in summer is 17.8 degrees Celsius and in winter it is 2.6 degrees Celsius, whilst in summer the average maximum temperature is 33.4 degrees Celsius and in winter it is 15.2 degrees Celsius. The average rainfall is 588 millimeters per year.

Dubbo is home to the internationally renowned Western Plains Zoo, a large open range zoo covering 300 hectares and Australia’s largest zoo. The zoo features not only Australian animals but elephants, Cape Hunting dogs, hippopotamus, zebra, cheetahs, giraffes and rhinoceroses from Africa, tigers and lions from Asia, and other exotic animals from North and South America. The zoo is also well known internationally for its breeding programme for endangered species particularly rhinoceroses, giraffes and Mongolian horses.

Two Australian renowned universities---the University of Sydney and the University of Charles Sturt have branch campuses in Dubbo. Dubbo has a school of distance education; a regional base hospital; regional sporting, recreational, medical, legal and entertainment facilities; airport and many government services.

The regional livestock market---- Fletchers International Abattoirs is the largest livestock market in Australia.

The multi-million-dollar Western Cultural Center displays Dubbo’s culture, geography and milestone events. There’re 5,000 pieces of historical relics and modern works of art. It’s an ideal place for children to explore and people to relax themselves.

Dubbo people play many sports including football , soccer, netball, cricket, bowls, golf, croquet, shooting and gymnastics. Dubbo region boasts hockey courts with international standard, the Aquatic Leisure Center with heated Olympic and leisure pools, world-class skating rinks, one of the best football courts in NSW, the first–class golf courses, the first-class horseracing lawns. People enjoy activities such as cycling, horse racing, cinema, dancing, fishing and swimming. Dubbo Turf Club Derby Day is one of the most famous horse-riding races in Australia.

It has a rich and abundant variety of natural flora and fauna and is surrounded by a number of national parks and conservation reserves.

On May 10th,2016, the city of Dubbo and the shire of Wellington were merged as the Western Plains Region. In Sep 7th, 2016, it was formally named as Dubbo Region.

In Sep 2017, The 1st Dubbo Regional Council and Mayor was elected in Dubbo Region. According to requirement of Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and intentions of both sides, on Nov 17th , 2017, Wujiang District Government and Dubbo Regional Council re-signed the revised Agreement on the Establishment of Friendship City Relationship.
