The Wujiang Public Culture and Art Center, founded in 1927, is located at No. 9 Miaoqian Street, Wujiang District. It grew out of the Urban Public Education Center and in 1952, it was renamed Wujiang County Culture Center. It is a national class-A culture center and has received a number of honorary titles, including “Advanced Collective of the Jiangsu Provincial Cultural System”, “Advanced Collective in the Conduction of Activities to Bring Cultural, Scientific and Medical Services to Rural Areas”, and “Suzhou Municipal Outstanding Organization Serving the Cultural Building for Farmers and Grass-roots Units”. Its “Regional Cultural Linkage to Serve Migrant Workers” project, which was awarded the title of “Demonstration Project of Cultural Service for Migrant Workers” by the Ministry of Culture, won the National Innovation Award and was designated as a national innovation project. The projects of “Construction of Wujiang Opera Cultural Ecological Protection Zone” and “Innovation and Demonstration of Public Digital Cultural Service Model of Culture Centers” were recognized as national cultural innovation projects.
In February 2012, the original Wujiang Culture Center, Wujiang Art Troupe, Wujiang People’s Theatre and Wujiang Pingtan Troupe merged to form Wujiang Public Culture and Art Center. It has nine departments: the general office, the creative department, the performing arts department, the training department, the choreography department, the theater department, the intangible cultural heritage department, the Pingtan art department and the information department. With an area of more than 7,800 square meters, the culture and art center houses an auditorium, dance rooms, piano/instrument practice rooms, painting, calligraphy and photography training rooms, and rehearsal rooms for bands, art ensembles and traditional opera troupes.
